Script #2: PETER PAN SCRIPT

Please note that this script was written for a children's role-playing theme park. It is designed for audience participation. In this case, the participants are children who chose to role-play in the theatre venue of the park. They have a limited amount of time to rehearse, so the format calls for the adult attendants (in this case the Narrator) to feed the players lines, eliminating the need for memorization. This technique also affords opportunities for comedy if and when the children deliver awkward or bizarre line readings. The narrator's comments about the kids' faux pas usually result in additional comic moments.

Due to confidentiality agreements, the company's name, and any words or phrases that might reveal its identity, have been omitted. Please note that the following is a four page excerpt from the original 21-page document.

INTRO (:30)

House lights dim to half and theatrical lights up on main drape as the voiceover narration is delivered by the NARRATOR (O/S). As the NARRATOR speaks, an adventurous MUSICAL UNDERSCORE plays.

NARRATOR (V/O)

All children, except one, grow up. His name is Peter Pan. You may have seen him in the twinkle of the stars just after sunset. Sometimes he visits through an open window on a breezy night. Sometimes he plays in your dreams. But always, always...he does whatever he wants to do. He is every child. And he lives in NAME OMITTED Land-a place where children go to try new things, to have adventures...to do whatever they please.

ACT I: Darling Children's Bedroom (3:30)

CURTAINS OPEN to reveal Darling Children's Bedroom at night. WENDY DARLING and her younger brothers JOHN and MICHAEL are asleep in their beds. Through the large window in the upstage wall behind them, the cool blue twilight sky can be seen.

NARRATOR (who is also the "DIRECTOR") enters. She is a warm, kindly looking Englishwoman, primly attired. [NOTE: Alternately, NARRATOR may be an English gentleman representing grown-up Michael Darling. Character names and pronouns, in this case, should be adjusted accordingly.] She stands near one of the wings, unnoticed by the children.

NARRATOR

How do I know this? Because my name is Wendy Darling. Many years ago, when I was a just little girl, Peter Pan came to take my brothers and me on a wonderful adventure.
(gestures to Wendy in her bed)
There you see me now, in my bed.
(gestures to John and Michael in their beds)
And there are my brothers, John and Michael, fast asleep. And now look! There, through the window, comes Peter Pan and the fairy, Tinker Bell!

PETER PAN and TINKER BELL step through the window, into the bedroom.

NARRATOR (cont'd.)

You see, they were looking for Peter's shadow, which he had accidentally left behind on an earlier visit.

PETER and TINK proceed to search the bedroom, tiptoeing around.

NARRATOR (cont'd.)

They looked in the toy chest...

PETER and TINK open the toy chest and look in, shake their heads, and drop the lid.

NARRATOR (cont'd.)

They looked under the beds...

PETER and TINK peer under the beds and again shake their heads in disappointment.

NARRATOR (cont'd.)

...then Peter looked in the dresser drawer...

PETER goes to the dresser and pulls open the top drawer.

NARRATOR (cont'd.)

...and Peter yelled, "Aha! My shadow!"

PETER (yelling)

Aha! My shadow!

NARRATOR

We were very deep sleepers in the Darling house...anyway, Peter pulled his shadow out of the drawer and shook it out. Then he put it on so it fit properly.

PETER reaches into drawer, mimes shaking out his invisible shadow, and pretends to attach it to his feet.

CUE SPOTLIGHT

NARRATOR (cont'd.)

Peter was so happy to have found his shadow, he struck a pose...

PETER stands, hands on hips and feet apart, in the spotlight beam so that his shadow is cast onto the bedroom wall.

NARRATOR (cont'd.)

...and he was bursting with so much pride, he started to crow like a rooster!

PETER(loudly)

Cock-a-doodle-doo!

NARRATOR

Like I said, we were VERY deep sleepers, so he cock-a-doodle-doo-ed so loudly...

PETER(loudly)

Cock-a-doodle-doo!

NARRATOR

...it finally woke us up. Wendy and her brothers sat up in their beds.

WENDY, JOHN and MICHAEL sit up in their beds, startled awake. WENDY is in her nightgown. JOHN and MICHAEL are in their pajamas. JOHN wears round-rimmed glasses and a silk top hat. MICHAEL clutches a teddy bear under his arm.

NARRATOR (cont'd.)

They rubbed their eyes in disbelief.

WENDY, JOHN and MICHAEL each rub their eyes with their fists.

NARRATOR (cont'd.)

Then, all together, they said: "Who are you?"

WENDY, JOHN & MICHAEL

(together) Who are you?

NARRATOR

...just like they had practiced it! Then Peter bowed and said "I'm Peter Pan!"

PETER

(bowing) I'm Peter Pan!

NARRATOR

Tinker Bell curtseyed and said a tinkling hello.

TINKER BELL curtsies, jingling her silver bells (which is what she uses to "talk").

NARRATOR

Wendy, John and Michael were amazed. They had never before seen such a big-really big-fairy. They hopped out of their beds and gathered around to meet their new friends.
